Dry Ice Blasting is ideal for surface preparation prior to NDT of weld lines, boiler tubes and any pressured pipe work, etc. Dry Ice Blasting cleans to a superior standard at a faster speed compared to alternative methods.

Effectively preparing surfaces for re-coating, coating, painting or cosmetic finishings is essential if a lasting finish is to be achieved and to avoid premature rework. Dry Ice Blasting is highly effective in removing contaminants such as grease, oil, rust and scale from surfaces, ensuring surfaces are cleaned to a superior standard.

It may often be unnecessary to remove all the paint and coatings from the surface. “Our experience has shown that surface preparation projects can often be over specified,” explains Polar IceTech Managing Director, Damien McDonnell. “Often it is not necessary to remove the coating from the entire surface area.”

Dry Ice Blasting removes paint and coatings where the bond is broken (chipped or flaking). However, it does not remove good quality coatings, but cleans them to a high standard, ready for touch-up.

Damien explained that one of the key advantages of using Dry Ice Blasting for Surface Preparation is the reduced cost and downtime associated with no secondary waste stream.

“Our experience has shown us that the cost associated with the secondary waste stream can be of significant concern to our customers. Dry Ice sublimates on contact with the surface, therefore there is no secondary waste stream. This, in turn, means there is no time and financial cost to creating enclosures to capture secondary waste and disposal or treatment of this waste after cleaning.”

Dry Ice is also a non-abrasive cleaning media, ensuring that surfaces undergoing preparation are not damaged.  It is also moisture free, ensuring that no additional oxidation occurs.
